About Us

About Fur to Feathers…

Fur to Feathers is a small, owner operated, local business, serving the needs of pets and their families in Northern Fairfield County. We are based in Monroe, CT and are dedicated to providing the best care possible for our clients, both human and animal! The business came about after years of choosing not to vacation away from home because of the difficulty in finding pet care. Living in a multi-species home, including a 30 year old parrot, a cockatiela rescue bulldog mix, and a 6 ½ pound, long haired chihuahua, boarding care was not an option. Even securing at home pet sitting care has been difficult with parrot care involved. We are Full Service Pet Care, offering everything you need to accommodate daily schedules, extended days, vacation care, overnight care and pet transportation.

Who will be my Caregiver?

Growing up in rural CT, she was surrounded with animals and to see her is to know that she is truly gifted with them.

Gwen Gangi - Owner: Gwen has always lived with a variety of animals. Including domestic, farm and wild animals. Growing up in rural CT, she was surrounded with animals and to see her is to know that she is truly gifted with them. She has been an Animal Communicator all her life, but it wasn’t until she was in her late 20’s when she realized what her “thing” with animals really was. Beyond typical domestic animals, she also had a pet raccoon and a pet red fox in her youth. Surrounded by local farms, she grew up caring for chickens, ducks, sheep, goats and cows, as well as the usual array of domestic animals. Currently she volunteers her Animal Communication skills for any local rescue organization. Although she is not a trainer, she works with the health, behavior and overall well-being of all type of animals. She currently resides in Monroe, with her husband and son, her 30 year old parrot, a cockatiel, a rescue bulldog mix, and a long haired chihuahua. Family, friends and animal rescue volunteers often turn to her for advice on animal care issues.

Gwen is a Registered Dental Hygienist, has a B. A. in Sociology, and a Masters in Elementary Education. She had been a practicing Dental Hygienist for more than 25 years, and (finally) decided to follow her heart and do what she has always longed to do, work with animals.

“Carol is our specialist in farm and horse care”

Carol Cholko: Carol has been with Fur to Feathers for 2 years now. Carol is our specialist in farm and horse care. She has a B. S. in Animal Science and used to breed and show Airedale terriers. Currently she owns a horse that she keeps in Newtown, CT. She is at the stable almost daily providing care to her and other’s horses. She is experienced in taking care of her friends horse farms on the occasions that they have needed care. Carol has a fantastic relationship with all the clients at Fur to Feathers, 2-legged and 4-legged. (Minus 1 - a dog who hates horses so hates her!) Carol and Gwen have known each other since they met in Dental Hygiene school in 1987. She has two young adult children, and lives in Huntington, CT. She is a reliable, caring and trusted member of the staff and we feel very lucky to have her on board.

She is great with all the animals, and has proven herself to be able to stay level headed and completely reliable in unusual and difficult situations that can arise when you are taking care of animals

Karen Randazzo: Karen has been with Fur to Feathers for about 1 ½ years. Karen currently has 2 dogs, 3 cats, a turtle, a hamster, and has had animals for much of her life. Karen and her husband own a local entertainment company, “Steppin’ Out Entertainment”. When Karen is not taking care of fur-children, she is teaching our local children to sing, dance and entertain. She runs after school programs and summer camps, and she writes, directs, and teaches at the Performing Arts Center of CT. She is great with all the animals, and has proven herself to be able to stay level headed and completely reliable in unusual and difficult situations that can arise when you are taking care of animals. Karen has been a huge asset to Fur to Feathers, and you and your animals will be well served when she is your caregiver. Karen has a B.A. in Theater, and lives in Trumbull with her husband and two children.

It was always a humbling experience when Noah would accompany Gwen on a visit and the animals would blow past Gwen without so much as a sniff to get to Noah coming in the door.

Noah Storey: Noah is Gwen’s son and has been around animals his whole life, and has been around the business since it’s inception 3 ½ years ago. He started accompanying Gwen on visits for a variety of reasons at the beginning, he is now working as a sitter for Fur to Feathers and performs all levels of care. From daily visits to overnight and 24 hour care to small farm care, Noah does it all. And the animals LOVE HIM!!! It was always a humbling experience when Noah would accompany Gwen on a visit and the animals would blow past Gwen without so much as a sniff to get to Noah coming in the door. “ Hello…I’ve been here almost every day for the last two years, and I don’t even get a “Hello”? “Nope….not until we say Hi to Noah…..” He is a graduate of Masuk High School, and is almost 19 years old. He has been a huge asset to Fur to Feathers, especially recently when Gwen was down with knee surgery. He was invaluable in providing coverage for many clients. He provides much of our long term care when clients are on extended leave away from home. What a relief to be able to leave home for an extended length of time and know that everybody’s everything is being taken care of. And getting daily updates to boot, that keep you in the loop of life at home. Noah lives at home with his mom Gwen, his dad Mike, and their furry and feathered kin.

Mom takes really, really good care of me I would trust her to take really good care of you too

Charlie: Hi, my name is Charles Allnut Storey, but everyone calls me Charlie. Mom thought I was a boy when she got me as a baby, but actually I’m a girl! I am 30 years old and mom and I have been together since I was being hand fed! We have been together for longer than her and dad even! Although mom had birds before me, I’m the one that brought her deep into the world of avian care and behavior. Let’s just say we have really learned to know and respect each other over the years. She says that I’ve taught her so much it’s scary, but that living with me is like living with a permanent 2 year old. Mom takes really, really good care of me I would trust her to take really good care of you too. And I’m not easy to get along with or take care of…I’ve driven a couple of pet sitters out…heh, heh, heh!!
Charlie is a Master Animal Communicator, and can help anyone overcome all doubt about being able to connect and communicate with our non-human family.

Princess lived to be over 20 years old and passed on April 5th, 2013. This is from when Fur to Feathers was opened

Princess:  My name is Princess, but you may call me “The Queen”.  I am an almost 19 year old cat, and let it be known to all that I rule the roost. It’s my needs first, as long as what you need does not interfere with that, then so be it. I came to my family from a very special rescue place. Mom and dad were both there and I picked them!  Mom had to really be determined to get dad to agree to take me home, but now I’m the only one he ever lets sleep on the bed at night. None of the others, HA!  I used to be allowed outside, my mom tried and tried to keep me in, but I broke through screen windows to get out…those were the days.  Several years ago I went deaf, I haven’t been outside since except on a leash. But I hate that thing, so why even bother!  I have  some medical issues that are typical of geriatric cats, but I am still very much part of the  family and continue to be the household morning alarm…louder now that ever since I went deaf! Now stop bothering me I have to take a nap!

My human family is OK, mom takes good care of me while respecting my needs about not being touched very much.

Lydia: Lydia is my name. I am a cockatiel who is about 25 years old, and has been part of this family for 19 years. My human family is OK, mom takes good care of me while respecting my needs about not being touched very much. Charlie is really the love of my life, because I am a boy. I never want to be apart from her, but she does not feel the same way, so I send her kisses across our cages, and know that some day she will love me back. Mom calls me Liddie, but when you really want to get my attention, you have to use my full name. I never would have thought I could have had cat and dog sisters who I get along with, but I do…and I like them better than my human family!

When mom brought me home from the shelter she promised me she would walk me every day, and she does!

Blossom: Hi, I’m Blossom a 5 year old Bulldog/Bull Terrier mix from a local shelter. I like to play, do you like to play? I love to chase after balls, Frisbees and sticks, then I like to bury them. I love to walk every day, do you? When mom brought me home from the shelter she promised me she would walk me every day, and she does! In rain and snow, hot or cold we’ve even been out in blizzards! Mom knows it helps me be the really good girl that I want to be. I have 2 bird sisters and 1 dog brother, and I am REALLY good with all of them. Most mornings we are all on the kitchen floor together waiting for mom to get breakfast. Mom told me she took me from the shelter because I was going to be put down because of a dog fight I got in. She knew I was a really good girl inside, and that I deserved a chance to be part of a family. Now she thinks I am better than she ever could have imagined. So, she was right, I AM A REALLY GOOD GIRL….do you wanna play now?

My first mom had Gwen come and take care of me 3 or so days a week, because she was not able to walk around real good

Macho: Hi, hi, hi, hi,hiiiiiiiiii!!!! My name is Macho and I am a 4 year old 6 ¾ pound Long Coated Chihuahua. Mom and dad kind of inherited me in January. Gwen has been taking care of me for a long time…like 3 years. My first mom had Gwen come and take care of me 3 or so days a week, because she was not able to walk around real good. So Gwen would come and take me out in the yard and we would have playtime…and then she would do stuff for my first mom that would help her take care of me and my cat sister that I used to live with. Then my first mom got really sick & had to go to the hospital. I got to go to Gwen’s, and my cat sister stayed home and Karen took care of her. Then my first mom passed over, and it was kind of scary because my sister and me were home with my first mom. Finally, Karen and Gwen found us and I got to go home with Gwen, and my sister got to go home with Karen! I’ve really enjoyed being able to have a mom and dad, and a dog sister who I love with my whole heart, and a bird sister that I also get along really well with. ( And she likes me…which mom says really means something!) And a human brother that takes care of me too. And now I can go up and down stairs, and play with lots of toys and run around in the yard every day and take walks even!! Plus I get to eat fish and sweet potato everyday that mom cooks for me, because I need an alkaline diet. And I am healthier now than I ever have been!! Maybe I will get to meet you because I love everybody!!!!!!!!
